The Empty Table maritime tradition recognizes friends and colleagues who have passed away.
A gentle breeze blew across the Great Lawn on Saturday, April 11, when nearly 150 members and guests of University Yacht Club celebrated 26 years of opening days.
The traditional cannon firing drew guests together to recognize the 2026 officers and bridge; the ceremony was conducted by 2026 Commodore Mike Lee.
“We are here today to honor the past, present and future of University Yacht Club as our annual tradition of Opening Day,” said Lee. “As I look over the members and guests who are here today, I am reminded of the friendships we make here and the long-standing traditions we honor.”
Lee explained the concept of the Empty Table: “The Empty Table represents many maritime traditions – the round table represents our continuing thoughts of those who have departed. The white tablecloth stands for our UYC members, spouses and friends who have passed away. The empty chair signifies all those who can no longer sit with us. The black napkin honors the emptiness in our hearts. Salt on the bread plate symbolizes the families’ tears wept for our missing shipmates. The upside-down wine glass reminds us of those who cannot join us in toasts, but whom we can toast in their memories. The single red rose comforts family members left behind.”
Fifteen past commodores attended the event. Lee also introduced 14 new members who have joined in the past year.
He polled the captains of the Sail Fleet and Power Fleet, assuring that all vessels are ready and prepared for the season.
