An abandoned boat sits on a trailer with plants growing out of the inside.

Plants take root in an abandoned boat removed from the lake by the Lake Lanier Association as part of its Abandoned Docks and Derelict Vessels program.

In keeping with its theme “Clean Lake. Full Lake. Safe Lake.” the Lake Lanier Association recently reached out to area dock builders for support. The organization has created a “Dock Builders’ Pledge” to enlist cooperation in stewardship and overall safety of the lake.

The LLA recently emailed its “Dock Builders’ Pledge” to approximately 20 Lake Lanier dock builders, asking them to sign the pledge acknowledging a number of points related to removing debris promptly after completing work and agreeing to maintain dock staging areas. In return for the agreement signature, dock builders are placed on the “Preferred” listing of dock builders on the LLA webpage to encourage lake home/dock owners to patronize these contractors.

“The Dock Builders’ Pledge is an outgrowth of Shore Sweep when we were at work and focused on keeping the lake clean,” said Terry Morrisey, board member who works with the organization’s Abandoned Docks and Derelict Vessels program. “We are asking the dock builders to commit to honor keeping the lake clean and safe as they perform their work and when they are finished with each contract to act professionally and proactively.”

Morrisey also addressed the three lake dock staging areas used by various dock builders to assemble and then launch the docks to their new locations.

“The area is littered with debris, abandoned dock floats, old docks and dumpsters and some have gotten out of hand,” he said. “We hope that the dock builders will act accordingly and respond to our pledge.”

So far, about 25-30 percent of the dock builders have signed the pledge that was distributed in late March, he said.

“We realize this is a busy time for them, but it’s also the beginning of the recreation season,” Morrisey said. “Having commitments from Lake Lanier dock builders will go a long way toward the continued stewardship of Lake Lanier.”
