For the past 18 years, the board of the UYC Maritime Foundation has recognized area high school students by awarding scholarships for students to continue their education. To date, more than $60,000 in scholarships has been awarded to Hall County students by the foundation.
This year, the foundation presented four scholarships to graduates at West Hall High School and two scholarships to graduates of Flowery Branch High School. Both high school’s guidance counselors promoted the availability of the scholarships to interested students.
“Each candidate was selected through a written application and essay, plus interviews with the UYC Maritime Foundation Scholarship Committee,” said Virginia Hale, chair of the foundation’s scholarship committee. “Each of them are pursuing higher education in Georgia, have earned Hope scholarships, have excelled in academics and participated in various activities during their high school years.”

This year’s recipients from West Hall High School are Karla Cruz, Gainesville, to attend UGA, daughter of Silvia Cruz; Eileen Frutos Cervantes, Gainesville, to attend Brenau University, daughter of Janet Frutos; Kierra Niles, Braselton, to attend Georgia College, daughter of Elizabeth Edmonds; and Olivia Phelps, Flowery Branch, to attend University of North Georgia, daughter of Amanda Phelps.
The two recipients from Flowery Branch High School are Ava Elizabeth Gensel, Oakwood, to attend UNG Dahlonega; and Shelby Ann Jackson, Flowery Branch, to attend UNG, daughter of Sheila Jackson.
The UYC Maritime Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 organization, was founded in 2005. Its purposes are to advance boater education, safety and sportsmanship, as well as provide scholarships to graduating seniors.
