Two University Yacht Club employees were surprised to receive scholarships from University Yacht Club and the UYC Maritime Foundation in mid-June. As is tradition, each year high school-aged employees working as servers in the dining room are chosen for scholarships.
This year’s recipients are Braden Green and Elijah Ramsey, both recent graduates of West Hall High School.
Green lives in Oakwood and will be attending Lanier Tech this fall, majoring in business and economics. His mother is Christina Green.
“Working at University Yacht Club is perfect for me,” said the 18-year-old who has been a server there for 18 months. “It’s my first job and is giving me good experience in a professional setting. And working at the lake is really nice, too.”
At West Hall, he’s been on the wrestling team. His hobbies include music. “I’m into the older rock classics, believe it or not,” he said with a smile. “Studying business and economics is important to my career because of how they are intertwined. They both will provide a strong foundation.”
Receiving the scholarship was unexpected.
“I was so surprised when I heard that I would be receiving a scholarship, and it certainly will help me reach my goals,” Green said. “In addition to University Yacht Club and the UYC Maritime Foundation, I want to thank my mom for all she’s done for me.”
Elijah Ramsey will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design this fall, majoring in Film/Acting. A graduate of West Hall High School he lives in Oakwood with his parents Lynnesha Ramsey and Victoria McBride.
He began working as a server in the University Yacht Club dining room in April 2023.
Ramsey has acted in several productions at West Hall, including the role of Wadsworth in the murder mystery play, “Clew.”
“The most fun was being a character with a secret,” he said with a sparkle in his eyes. “Stage acting is different than acting on camera. Live acting requires you to get it right the first time; there are no retakes or do-overs. I like that challenge.”
In addition to the University Yacht Club/UYC Maritime Foundation scholarship, he was chosen for a second scholarship from the UYC Maritime Foundation this year.
“I am so grateful to University Yacht Club and the UYC Maritime Foundation for selecting me,” Ramsey said. “I am honored and blessed.”
