Fishing
tourney for charity set for Aug. 2 on Lake Hartwell
By Ross Norton
Heidi Clayton and her friends in
metro Atlanta wanted to raise money to fight breast cancer, and they
didn’t quite want the men in their lives off the hook.
Clayton and Jennifer Spence,
Wendy Timler and Barbara Rinker intend to take part in the 2008
Atlanta Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk this October. Participation in that
event requires team members to raise $2,200 each. In the 3-Day Walk,
they will cover 60 miles in Atlanta. They will camp out for two
nights and take part in activities. Many of the participants are
breast cancer survivors and patients, and many of them are women.
“We needed to raise money and we
wanted to target the men in our lives,” Clayton said.
So Clayton, Spence, Timler and
Rinker – calling their team The Pink Pumas – set their sights on
Lake Hartwell, where Clayton and her husband have a house, and
planned Fishing For A Cure to raise money for The Pink Pumas to
forward on to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the organization behind
the 3-Day Walk nationwide.
Fishing For A Cure is a team
bass fishing tournament Aug. 2 at Big Oak Recreation Area on U.S.
Highway 29 near Hartwell.
Clayton said they chose that
site because of its ample pavilion and proximity to deep water.
The tournament is open to
everyone and the two-person teams must have at least one person who
is 18 or older on Aug. 1. The entry fee is $100 per team and prizes
will be awarded for first, second and third place, as well as a big
fish competition. Prize money will be based on the number of teams.
Participation will be capped at
75 teams.
“We’ve been talking about it and
it seems like a lot of people are very excited about the
tournament,” Clayton said.
Deadline to have entry forms
turned in is one week before the tournament.

tournament or to receive an entry form, call (770) 490-9172 or
